Day 9 #30daysofme
What am I proud of in the last few days? Well let me see????
Sad but true, probably the fact that I went out yesterday and bought a new barrel for the top lock on out front door and whole new lock for the bottom handle, and fitted them. Both our locks have gone to the pack in the last month and so it was getting frustrating. Fitting them involved a fair bit of chiseling etc, so I was feeling like Mr Handyman, which is something I don't do often.
What next? Well the bathroom needs sorting.....
Day 8 #30daysofme
Short term goals for this month? Ok here we go
1) Ensure that the MyCard Online Project delivers on time, on target and with a minimal amount of fuss. This is the way I like projects to run and frankly I have no interest in stress!
2) Tidy my study. It is a freaken mess. I have added things and added things. I need to sort it out, I need to throw things out.
3) Finish one of the 3 songs I am writing at the moment on the Piano. I need to close one and I need to practice more and getting better.
I think 3 for a month is ok don't you?

Day 7 #30daysofme
Someone or something that has had a huge influence on me. Well George Michael actually. A bit ironic, since the silly git has got himself behind bars for 4 weeks, but his drug issues aside, he has influenced me musically more than anyone else. I don't care what you say about his music or his issues, the guy has got a great voice and that is his first and foremost influence on me. As a singer, I aspire to sound as good as him, aspire to be as comfortable as him on stage, aspire to write half as well as him. He has consistently changed and adapted muscially over several decades now and I always like his stuff. It was a total highlight for me to see him live at the start of this year, a lifetime ambition come true.

Day 6 #30daysofme
Ok, so my favourite superhero.... Well I really do think it has to be Batman. I am talking 1960's TV Batman here by the way. Camp to the mostest, the show was brilliant, and I remember spending many an hour as a child watching it when I cam home from school. I like the fact that he had no special power, just lots of money and things he invented. Who doesn't love the Batmobile and the associated toys? Cheesy oneliners peppered the show and the Bam, Kapow, Wham, sound effects bubbles just made it so cool.

Day 4 #30daysofme
Ok so I am behind here. So gotta do a few days tonight :-)
Probably my bad habit I wish I didn't have would be my tendency to move from one thing to another quite quickly and be fickle. This is especially irritating to me when it comes to music. I have so many songs half written it is not funny. To finish one would be nice..... But of course it is not just music, I get all enthusiastic about something, spend a good amount of money on it, 3 months later I have moved on to something else. So yeah, there you have it.....

Day 2 # 30daysofme
What's in a blog name. Well I actually technically have 2. They often mirror each other and they are all very predictable. This one, Corin's Posterous is about as vanilla as it gets. I also have my "main site" corinhaines.com. Currently that site is my post things that interest me/fascinate me,wish to blog about site. This may all change in the future, but corinhaines.com will always be around. In the past I have had blogs with supposedly clever titles like Musings from Left Field etc. But I never really wanted to listen to myself that much.
So not much to say on that one really......

Day 1 #30daysofme
This is me, just now.... Don't get much more recent than that
1) I left school half way through 7th form to become a writer. I am not a writer......
2) My first ever real grown up job was working for a clothes place called Galvins in ChCh. I lasted 1 day, I hated it.
3) I am the last of 6 boys, my oldest brother is 19 years older than me. I have no sisters.
4) I have four tattoos. Two on each arm. I got my first tatttoo in Geelong after I had travelled there to consumate an internet romance. I left Australia with the tattoo and no relationship.
5) I never took singing lessons or sang solo in public until 5 years ago. Since then I have sang at weddings, civil unions and on TV
6) My first ever band obession was Duran Duran. I was obsessed with Nick Rhodes. My parents thought I was gay.
7) I am quite self concious and shy. I hide this.
8) Personally, I am happier now than I have ever been in my life.
9) I was confirmed in the Catholic Church at age 11. Soon afterwards I stopped going to church and believing in God
10) I had never seen a dead body until I saw my mother in her coffin 3 years ago. My father passed away last year. I am not sure I truly understand that they are dead.
11) I become obsessed with things, the obsession never lasts. I can be fickle.
12) I have keloid scars on my shoulders which I hate.
13) My first crush was at age 10. I told her, and she never talked to me again.
14) For years I thought the line in the Carbury Creme Egg song that goes "such a devious boy, heavens above" was "such a devious boy have a spud"
15) Age 14 I read Midsummer Nights Dream for the first time, in one go. I finished about 3 am and burst out crying. I have no idea to this day why it made me so upset. I have never read it again.

Canterbury Earthquake
I like many people heaved a huge sigh of relief on Saturday when it became apparent that no one has been killed by the earthquake which struck the Canterbury region and wrecked such havoc in Christchurch. However, as the news continues to come in about how devastated parts of Christchurch are, it is slowly sinking in how torn apart the lives of some people down there have been and how long it will take for the city to return to some semblance of normality. As someone who grew up in Christchurch and lived there until I was 30, it is scary to think of the place which seemed so stable being torn apart. Please spare a thought for the people who have been badly affected by this quake, and try to remember them in the coming months when the media attention turns elsewhere and most people will have moved on with their lives. The damage and destruction wrought there does not disappear overnight and for many people they are beginning a long period of rebuilding. This earthquake could have struck anywhere in New Zealand and those of us not living in Christchurch when it occurred are can count ourselves lucky it wasn't us this time. Many people have been through hard times recently and were probably going without insurance, these people will be badly affected. There have been conversations about how to deal with these people and what message it sends to bail them out when others have been paying for their insurance. Surely, this is a time for compassion and sympathy. This is a time when New Zealanders should stand up and help our people who have found themselves caught out by this disaster. It could happen to anyone of us, if the circumstances fell that way. Please give financially if you can, and give of your thoughts no matter what.

The Smiths Project
I have been getting quite inspired lately but some brilliant people and concepts I am coming across online. The PostSecret project is one and then.....
This morning I woke and flicked on Twitter and found a message from someone called Janice who I did not know. She was pointing me to a project she is doing. I am a The Smiths fan and so is she. Well, all I can say is it is one of the best Twitter links I have EVER followed. Quite simply Janice is working through the entire catalogue of songs by The Smiths, recording them all just with voice. She uses her voice in a variety of ways to cover all aspects of the the instrumentation of the songs. Most impressively, she is not trying to build direct covers, she is actually effectively remixing the songs as well. What she is building is a marvelous collection of lushly layered and multitracked covers of these beautiful songs. What she is, quite obviously, is bloody brilliant and clever! I am listening to some of the tracks as I write this, each one new to my ears. The problem I am having is everyone becomes my favourite after listening to it, they are all seriously good arrangements. Well done Janice and thank you for the link to your lovely work.
Here is one of her tracks, The Boy With The Thorn In His Side.....
Check the rest of her work out at http://thesmithsproject.blogspot.com

Potato Perfection
So I have to share that I just made the best roast potatoes ever, after years of crap ones.. So here is the technique:
1) Quarter medium size potatoes
2) Par boil (5 mins)
3) Drain and return to the pot, shake vigorously for 10 seconds
4) Place in an oiled oven tray which has been left to heat up in a 200 C oven for 5 mins
5) Turn Potatoes in the oil and place in the oven
6) Cook for 1 hour, turning every 20 mins
Voila, crispy on the outside, fluffy and light on the inside......

Eco Positive Periods?
It makes perfect sense, but I never really thought about reusable menstrual pads apart from hippies using Sphagnum Moss on the West Coast of the South Island. We do it for babies, why not adults? They look kind of cute too. That said, I can imagine they would not be to everyone's taste.
